• How to Qualify for the Energy Tax Credit

  • It’s tax season.  That means that people are filing their taxes and trying to deduct everything they possibly can—charitable donations, self-employed business expenses, family expenses, etc.  But did you know that you can deduct your energy efficient windows and doors as well?  If you’ve replaced your windows and/or doors in your home with energy efficient ones, you may qualify for a tax deduction.  If you plan on replacing them in the near future, you can begin to check into the requirements so that you can be sure yours will qualify you when you file next year!

energy tax creditAccording to ENERGY STAR’s website, in order to qualify for the tax credit for windows, doors, and skylights, some requirements must be met:

    • The energy-efficient windows, doors, or skylight must be installed in the taxpayer’s primary residence.  This means that those of you who are renting out homes won’t get the credit (but you will help your tenants save money and be more efficient by installing these products!)
    • They must be installed sometime between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2016.  So if you’ve been thinking about replacing your windows or doors with something more energy efficient, there could not be a better time!  Not only will you reap the rewards of energy savings, but you’ll also be eligible for this tax credit!  Why not make this the year you do the window or door project you’ve been waiting on so you can see the most benefit from it?
    • Meet the ENERGY STAR program requirements:
      • The installed product must be manufactured by an ENERGY STAR partner.
      • The windows, doors, and/or skylights must be independently tested, certified, and verified by the National Fenestration Rating Council
        • These ratings help determine which windows/doors are most energy efficient for your specific climate
      • They must have NFRC ratings that meet the guidelines for energy efficiency set by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

This credit may equal up to 10% of the product cost (not including installation costs) for values up to $200 for eligible windows and skylights and $500 for eligible doors.  These are savings that are too big to miss out on, so don’t forget to talk to your accountant if you’ve recently replaced your windows, doors, or skylights!  Call the company from whom you purchased them and who installed them and find out about their eligibility for this tax credit!
